Wireless Communications

Within the last decade, modern wireless communications have rapidly gained popularity among those who design and maintain today's complex traffic-management systems…for good reason. Wireless communications offer many advantages over traditional hard-wire connections in Intelligent Transportation Systems. 

Today's traffic engineers and maintenance personnel have two fundamental choices for sending and receiving signals between sensors, signs, signals and controllers in traffic-control and monitoring systems: 1) underground cables (either copper/FSK or fiber), or 2) wireless (radio).

For reasons given above, there are compelling arguments for choosing wireless communications in new systems, in temporary maintenance or repair situations, system expansion and in system modernization.

The Basic Technology
All ENCOM wireless products use modern frequency-hopping spread-spectrum (FHSS) technology, transmitting in the license-free (ISM) 900MHz band of (for specific applications, 2.4 GHz FHSS can also be provided). The combination of a long-ranging frequency and FHSS minimizes interference from common RF sources, ensuring high data reliability and coverage of long distances. In addition, the FHSS radio modems function as repeaters, thus enabling even longer ranges and complex network setups.
